how sweet to have a song of old as the song of your youth lovely to know a whispered folk tune as your own soft lullabye oh, I would claim it heart and soul I'd claim it for my own and with it the sweet memory of a childhood never known how the tastes and smells that form us thread so thinly through my past how my tastes pose lingering questions that I'd rather not have asked a self made orphan nose pressed to the smeary glass of time hungry for nostalgia even when it isn't mine oh, I will walk this line, I'll walk it day by day year after year I wil walk the line between my heedless joy and needless fear I will tread the windy path that has led me to this place somewhere between disaster and a tender state of grace

twenty-fifth of August and I'm a long, long way from home I can't spy October but I know that it exists 'til October comes and bound and signed to roam how to spend all my days? wend my way through September's maze have to just sit here on these warm rocks dangling my feet into the clear green cool I better just sit here wasting my days soak in this scene don't bother feeling a fool twenty-eighth of August and I'm a long, long way from you looking at your picture is the only way I know I could ever hope to improve upon the view time to rest with time to spare when I get home there'll still be time to share have to just sit here on these warm rocks dangling my feet into the clear green cool I better just sit here wasting my days soak in this scene don't bother feeling a fool time is not always on our side it looks like my road is twice as long as it is wide and it is so, very wide thirty-first of August and I've a long, long way to go tomorrow brings September thirty days to remind me how much love I have still got to show would I speed through these hours? wish myself some magic genie powers? have to just sit here on these warm rocks dangling my feet into the clear green cool I better just sit here wasting my days soak in this scene don't bother feeling a fool have to just sit here on these warm rocks dangling my feet into the clear green cool I better just sit here wasting my days soak in this scene don't bother feeling a fool

on the airplane there were fancy glasses and never ending seven-up 'cause the pretty lady with the silly hat seemed determined not to let me drain my cup a stomach full of butterflies or something live but equally improbable back when everything and anything was possible as the crow flies about a thousand miles to touch the hands that we set out to reach I want a lifetime and not just twenty days to find each and every treasure on that beach a head so full of questions and a motor mouth that nearly was un-top-able back when everything and anything was possible prickly, and sparkly my eyes fill with unshed tears do I mourn the loss of what might have been? swiftly, so smartly I smother each unfed fear 'cause I want to pack them up send them back to where I begin a roll of thunder under a ceiling blue names I never really learned and don't repeat and the living lie that we danced around like a ghostly rope it's tangled at me feet a heart so full of wonder at a way of life that I'd assumed impossible back when everything and anything was possible Ohhhhhhhhh eyes and ears so full of every sight and sound the roar of shells the taste and smell of memories found salty waves flooding in unstoppable back when everything and anything was possible was possible was possible

can you see that sun? watch it tumble through the trees like your chosen one does it bring you to your knees? step into that light let it warm you, to the core know the sting and bite of wanting that much more why don't you open your heart turn your face to the sun? why don't you raise your voice in song and dance, dance, dance down the path as you sow you reap why not dig in with a grin? just like a child mid-leap that joy is right beneath your skin and the life half lived it's the life that's lived in fear it is your gift to give all that you would hold most dear why don't you open your heart turn your face to the sun? why don't you raise your voice in song and dance, dance, dance down the path hop and a skip and a jump to the grave wait 'til you're ninety you'll see so take this loving tip I offer it to you from me why don't you open your heart turn your face to the sun? why don't you raise your voice in song and dance, dance, dance down the path

and so, it comes to this an awkward shake of hands this unforeseen farewell leaves me in uncharted lands and so, it comes to this you'd think I would have known when any fool could see that long ago you'd flown it comes to this I didn't see you'd flown and so, it comes to this though we're not in accord I try my best to smile while you try to act like you're not bored and so, it comes to this no happy endings here just dry goodbyes, dry eyes no tears it comes to this goodbye no tears take me oh, take me anywhere but here bend me back to a time when I was who you looked to make me oh, make me into what you need need me want me I could be it Oh, I don't see why it comes to this and look, I'm on my own still it's not free I feel it's just so, very alone and so, it comes to this where to, I hardly know I only see that even if I stayed that you would go it comes to this you stay I'll go

about

Welcome to my world. Songs that are right at the heart of who I am. They all tell a story - some mine and some imagined. Stories are everything. They tell us who we are, who we were, who we can be. They keep us company. They break our hearts. Inspire, frighten, challenge, soothe. The five stories on this EP were written by me but beautifully arranged and produced by my oldest son, Michael Ward. Recorded at Aspen’s Place Recording studios in San Fernando, CA with the inestimable help and talents of Brian Ascenzo. I am forever changed by the process - as should be the way, with any artistic endeavor.

Sing along! Make up some different harmonies, please? The more the merrier, I say. Share it - Sing it - Dance Down The Path!
